Man Assaulted In San Jose For Speaking Spanish

The hate attacks continue, according to the reports, a San Jose Man was punched for speaking Spanish, the outrage is the fact that it is not an isolated case, we do have an idea of the causes for this hate crime, we feel that it is a result of hate-speech and the demonizing of groups in the public discourse, others have a certainty that it is the case.

Whether is an idea, a suspicion or a certainty that hate-speech in the Right Wing media has a direct effect on hate-crimes, we do have the responsibility to really take a hard look at the co-relation between hate-speech and hate-crimes.

SAN JOSE (BCN) ― A 28-year-old San Jose man was arrested on suspicion of committing a hate crime Monday after allegedly attacking another man because he was speaking Spanish, police Officer Jermaine Thomas said Tuesday.

The 53-year-old victim, who is Hispanic, was talking on his cell phone in Spanish in the area of Saratoga and Latimer avenues around 12:20 p.m. when the attack occurred, Thomas said.

The suspect, San Jose resident Scott Pontzious, who is white, allegedly told the victim during the assault that he needed to speak English.

Pontzious then fled but was later arrested nearby. He was booked into Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of battery and committing a hate crime, Thomas said.
