Southern Poverty Law Center May 29, 2009

New SPLC Intelligence Report released
Keith Luke Mark Potok's editorial describes a "resurgence of right-wing hate groups and radical ideas" in the United States. Five police officers have been killed by extremists in recent weeks.

Also in the issue: "From Hate to Hurt" - Experts discuss the link between hate propaganda and violence.

Abuse in Mississippi
SPLC has filed a federal class action suit to stop the horrible abuse of children at a for-profit, Mississippi detention center, where juveniles are confined in filthy, bug-infested cells for 23 hours a day with no adequate mental health or education services.

Lawsuits are just one of the strategies SPLC is using to reform a system that jails children, most of whom are poor and black, instead of providing adequate education and mental health services. SPLC President Richard Cohen is calling for a national dialogue on the issue.
