'American Nazis' goes inside the growing trend of hate in America. Neo-Nazi groups in the U.S. are made up of many factions, but they share a common ideology that includes veneration of Hitler, hatred of Jews, and white supremacy. We go inside three extreme groups - Aryan Nations, White Revolution, and the Nationalist Socialist Movement - to discover how they exploit anti-immigration sentiment for their own agenda, and how their violent rhetoric has led to hate crimes against Jews and Latinos.

Clash of Ideas on the National Mall

April 19th. It's a date that's never really held any great significance for me. In fact, as our video crew gathered on the national mall that spring morning our first thought was to try and get some b-roll of tourists hanging out in the warm weather, walking their dogs and playing Frisbee in front of the Washington Monument. It was just like any other pleasant day in the nation's capital. But, as the police buses began arriving on the mall, and the officers took up their positions lining the streets in SWAT gear, the idyllic scene started taking on a menacing tone. April 19th, is the day before Hitler's birthday. Our camera crew was there that morning because we were doing a story exploring the causes of the rise in membership among neo-Nazi organizations. The police were there because a group of American Nazis were coming to town to celebrate the birth of their Fuhrer. They planned to use the occasion to protest immigration and what they called the "browning of America." Their message was a simple one. They believe America should be a nation for whites only. On this day, they planned to march from the Washington Monument to the steps of the U.S. Capital to shout their message of hate to the world.

"He looked me in the eye and said 'Somebody has to stand up to these thugs and tell them that their hate is not welcome here... no matter what the consequences.' "

In the end over a 1000 police showed up to protect just over two dozen Nazis freedom of speech. It is America after all, and everyone, even Nazis, are free to say what they want. But, the police were on hand to make certain the Nazis' violent rhetoric didn't spark violent action. Nazi marches had incited violence before.

We were one of the first television crews to arrive on the mall to cover the march. We had gotten some shots in the morning of the preparations, and took a break for lunch while we waited for the Nazis to arrive. (Even when you're covering Nazis, you've got make sure you feed the crew.) We actually had a second crew tagging along with the Nazis as we had been covering the National Socialist Movement for several weeks before the event and we knew they were still about an hour away. We sat down on the grass near the monument to eat when we began to hear drumming and chanting, and group of about sixty young people came rushing towards us. All of them bright clothes, some had their faces painted and others hid their faces with bandanas. They were banging sticks on paint buckets with Swastikas with a slash through the symbol. These young people were from several anti-racist organizations from around the country. They had organized on the internet, and come together in Washington, D.C. to protest the Nazi march.

The anti-racists marched past us and straight up to the base of the monument. They were immediately confronted by three Nazi sympathizers who walked straight through the group to antagonize them. It worked. The two groups clashed and the police rushed in to restore order. Our cameras were in the middle as the chaos erupted, and by the time the pepper spray cleared, the police had moved the Nazi sympathizers out, and arrested several anti-racists. The confrontation erupted so quickly, and the consequences for the anti racists seemed so high that I wanted to ask them why they would risk getting busted in the head and going to jail just to protest a handful of Nazis. We talked with one of the protestors as he watched the police handcuff one of his friends. The man told me, that he had to show up. "This is America man, and this is our backyard" he said. " We can't just let these ignorant people who don't understand change just come in here and spew this hate" he continued. He looked me in the eye. "Somebody has to stand up to these thugs and tell them that their hate is not welcome here... no matter what the consequences" he said.

The arrests did not deter the anti-racists. By the time the Nazis showed up on the mall, the Anti-racist protestors outnumbered them more than 3 to 1. They followed the Nazis along the march route trying to drown out the Nazi hate speech with chants of their own. In the end, when the Nazis arrived on the steps of the capital to deliver the speech they waited months to deliver -- a speech extolling white supremacy, intolerance and hate -- none of the crowd who gathered could hear them. The Anti-racists drowned out their speech with another Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream speech" blared from a bullhorn.

After their march the Nazis declared victory in their war of ideas. They claimed they gained new members through their bold stand and even opened a few new chapters, but in a few short weeks I think the real winner will be evident. On that very location where the Nazis declared that America should be for whites only, the first African American in U.S. history will be sworn in as President of the United States. It seems Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream continues to drown out the Nazis hate.

Harsh Words, No Action

I wanted to post this here because I thought it was very interesting and I think that many people have forgotten our history. What is the best way to fight those who hate people, but to expose their lies with the truth.

David Duke and his White Nationalist like to blame most of our problems on the Jews, Blacks, and other non whites. Just the 30 minutes I listened to his Euro Conference this weekend was about the Jews and how they hate white people and don’t consider us human beings. I think his story was if a Jewish person needed a liver that he wouldn’t hestiate to grab a Non Jew off the street and take his liver. I know they won’t consider that hate speech or anything wrong with implying that we have to be afraid of the Jews in our midst, but I do find it very hateful and spreading lies as truth.

That is exactly what the Hitler and this Third Reich did in Germany. They poisoned the minds of the German people by telling them all these terrible lies as truth. I still have nightmares just thinking of the movie the Eternal Jew which is promoted as the truth in White Nationalist circles and families. The scene where the baby calfs were tortured and the movie said that is the way Jewish people butcher their cows for beef really got me angry. I love animals and I thought how could anyone be so cruel to animals. It was the German people love animals and are good and the Jews are terrible and are out to get the German Aryan race. The movie is presented as the truth. I see that same brainwashing going on in this country today.

I had never heard of the book the The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zionism until I was living with Jeff. It was one of the books on the required reading material. Again that book is passed off as the truth. It is a lie, but like the movie the eternal jew people who are being recruited into White Nationalism are told that is the truth and come to think that they must fear the Jew who they are told is out to destroy them. It was just another book to me that I couldn’t get through because it make me sick to my stomach, but just told Jeff I read it.

Kristallnach did happen, though I know White Nationalists either deny it or blame the Jews and look at it as Germans just defending themselves or some delusion that they hold as the truth.

For those of us engaged in the fight against anti-Semitism, the commemoration of Kristallnacht which took place 70 years ago on November 9-10, has special meaning. Of course, Kristallnacht is important to remember because it was the moment when it became clear that Nazi hatred of Jews was beyond anything seen before. It is important to remember because there are yet those among us who lived through, witnessed it, and survived it. And it is important to remember because after Kristallnacht, the world no longer had any excuses for not acting against the barbarism of Nazi anti-Semitism.

Most of all, however, Kristallnacht teaches us the most basic lesson about how to view anti-Semitism and other forms of hatred. One could ask the question: if we observe Yom HaShoah every spring, why do we need to have a second commemoration every year on the anniversary of Kristallnacht? The answer, I believe, lies in the different focus. Yom HaShoah speaks to the horror of the murder of six million. It remembers and calls attention to the ultimate brutality that humans are capable of and that the history of anti-Semitism eventually produced. It is about remembering the millions of people whose lives were snuffed out because of hatred. And it reminds us that “Never Again” must be a guiding principle of our lives as Jews.

Kristallnacht, on the other hand, is not about the end product of hate but the process. It represents the reality that a Holocaust does not just happen; it has to be prepared, cultivated, acted upon first in small steps, then bigger ones, and finally the biggest. In this sense, Kristallnacht commemoration is not only about remembering the over 90 Jews who were killed, the 30,000 male Jews who were arrested and sent to concentration camps, the over 1,000 synagogues which were torched along with their Torah scrolls and prayer books, and the 7,000 Jewish shops and business that were looted and destroyed.

It is also about how the Holocaust came to pass. It reminds us that the Holocaust couldn’t have happened had there not been 2,000 years of demonization of Jews throughout Europe, as reflected in the Decide charge and in the scapegoating of Jews as an evil and powerful force. It couldn’t have happened had there not been cynical anti-Semites who produced the infamous forgery The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zionism which gave credibility to the notion of worldwide Jewish satanic power.

Hatred in its most extreme form, like the Holocaust, evolves over time. The challenge is not to wait to stand up until the final stage when it is too late. The time to stand up is during its evolution, indeed as early as possible. Kristallnacht was the moment when the world had to stand up. It didn’t.

There was no doubt from that point on that the Nazis were no longer content to simply strip Jews of their legal rights. Many newspapers and government officials around the world decried the violence and barbarity of Kristallnacht, but few governments were prepared to act.

Franklin Roosevelt condemned the outrages and recalled the US Ambassador from Germany for “consultations,” but any liberalization of America’s tight immigration quotas was, he said, “not in contemplation.” The British cabinet allowed 10,000 Jewish children into Britain from December 1938 to September 1939 in the course of the famous Kindertransport, but refused to allow 21,000 more into Palestine.

Kristallnacht proved the point. The world responded with harsh words and no action. Soon enough, the words themselves echoed empty and hollow. Silence followed. Kristallnacht was the first nail in the coffin of European Jewry.

Kristallnacht commemorations are important for many reasons, including the need to show the world that we must stop hate in its tracks before it leads to the ultimate - a final solution.

Michael Savage es uno de los locutores de radio más escuchados en los Estados Unidos; su audiencia se estima en 10 millones de personas a nivel nacional. Transmite desde San Francisco, California, a través de la compañía Clear Channel. Es conocido por su perfil extremadamente reaccionario, racista y violento.

El 5 de julio del 2007, Savage le deseó la muerte a un grupo de estudiantes inmigrantes indocumentados que se encontraban en huelga de hambre para que se aprobara el Acta del Sueño. Savage dijo que los estudiantes mejor se "deberían de morir", para así quitarnos el problema de darles papeles. El locutor Savage también ha declarado que dada la crisis de combustible, se debería producir gasolina usando el cuerpo de los inmigrantes indocumentados.

En respuesta, la comunidad inmigrante del Área de la Bahía de San Francisco, coordinados por el locutor de radio Gutiérrez, crearon la Coalición Contra la Difamación de los Latinos Hispanos.

El 15 de agosto de 2007 esta coalición realizó una protesta frente a las oficinas de Clear Channel en el 340 de la calle Townsend en San Francisco, con el fin de detener los mensajes violentos y de corte racista de Savage contra los hispanos.

Pero pasó un año y Clear Channel, propietario de la estación radiofónica La Preciosa, se ha negado a atender las demandas de los inmigrantes. Por lo tanto, la Coalición volvió a repetir la protesta el 23 de septiembre de este año.

Aurora Grajeda, una de las organizadoras de la Coalición, dijo: "Estamos donde está basada la cabina de transmisión de KNEW 910AM, que es propiedad de Clear Channel Comunicacions cuya cadena radiofónica es la que transmite el programa del shock jock Michael Savage y otros mercaderes de odio e intolerancia en los medios de comunicación, y es precisamente esta cabina desde donde Michael Savage transmite su programa titulado 'Nación Salvaje', lo cual no es solamente una verguenza, sino una ignominia que desde esta bella y tolerante ciudad se ataque diariamente a tantas comunidades y grupos".

Las demandas de los inmigrantes, explicó Aurora, son: "1. Que Savage deje de atacar a nuestras comunidades, el no acatar este pedido, se demanda que Clear Channel lo despida. 2. Inclusión de miembros de la comunidad hispana / latina a todos lo niveles de la corporación, desde locutores hasta programación y administración; exigimos que el personal de Clear Channel refleje la comunidad a la que sirve y de la que se aprovecha para medrar".

Durante la protesta, Alianza News intentó conocer la respuesta de Clear Channel, pero la corporación se negó a hablar con los pocos medios que cubrieron el acto. Por cierto, algunos de los presentes manifestaron su inconformidad con Univisión y Telemundo por no haber enviado reporteros.

Ante la poca disposición mostrada por Clear Channel, expuso Marcos Gutiérrez, se buscará identificar a dos de los anunciantes de Savage para hacerles un boicot; los organizadores ya trabajan en esa opción.

"Michael Savage es el síntoma, no la enfermedad. La enfermedad es las grandes corporaciones que se han adueñado de los medios de comunicación, en lugar de, como dice la ley, que las ondas radiales y de televisión son del pueblo"?, expuso Gutiérrez.

Gutiérrez, quien enfocó su tesis de doctorado en medios de comunicación, añadió que "las corporaciones han permitido que elementos derechistas ataquen a los latinoamericanos, en particular a los inmigrantes, y esto está causando mucho daño; se puede comparar con los que hacían en Alemania contra los judíos, en el sentido de que los insultaban a tal grado de que después se aceptaba legislación en contra de ellos bastante fuerte. Y es lo que ha ocurrido, como lo dicen las estadísticas, el crimen de odio ha aumentado en todo el país, precisamente por esta clase de programación".
