Dear Martha,

A Black man is beaten to death by White teenagers after they assault him with racist slurs. The attackers tell the man's friends they'll be next if they and "their kind" don't leave town. Then, the attackers are cleared of all serious charges by an all-White jury.

We know this type of story all too well given the history of Black folks in this country. This time, the story is about a Latino man--Luis Ramirez--killed because he was a Mexican immigrant. Luis' murder is part of a growing trend of hate-based violence against Latinos, and most elected officials have been unwilling to even acknowledge it.

ColorOfChange exists to fight for the interests of African-Americans and amplify our political voice. But when we see this kind of hate directed at another group of people, we want to make sure our members have an opportunity stand up against it. Our friends at Presente.org are calling on the governor of Pennsylvania to break his silence, now.

Luis Ramirez is dead for two reasons: he was Latino and an immigrant. The time for change and accountability is now. Will you stand with us and demand Governor Rendell speak out?

Dear Presente.org member,

After they had beaten Luis Ramirez to death, the white teenagers who attacked him sent an ominous message to Luis' friends:

Tell your f**king Mexican friends to get the f**k out of Shenandoah or you'll be f**king laying next to him.¹

Just over a week ago, two of Ramirez's killers were acquitted of all serious charges by an all white jury², with the jury foreman making it clear that justice for Ramirez had no chance in the small town of Shenandoah, PA:

I believe strongly that some of the people on the jury were racist. I believe strongly that some of the people on the jury had their minds made up maybe before the first day of trial...And I believe the four boys that were involved the most are racist. I absolutely do...³

Thanks to the hard work of MALDEF and others, the Department of Justice is now looking into Ramirez' death.⁴ But that's only part of what's needed. Where are the leaders in the State of Pennsylvania? Why has the governor had nothing to say? His silence is shameful.

Until our elected leaders speak up, we can expect more stories like Luis'--not just in Shenandoah, but across the country. Governor Rendell owes it to Pennsylvanians and Latinos everywhere to condemn and speak out on what's happened. Together we can demand that he does. If Luis Ramirez's death were an isolated event it would be outrageous enough. Sadly, it's part of a growing trend of racially motivated violence against Latinos, particularly in rural communities. According to the FBI, hate crimes against Latinos rose 35% between 2003 and 2006.⁵ And as author David Niewert writes, the target of hate crimes goes beyond their immediate victims: "The purpose is to terrorize the target community, to drive them out, eliminate them."⁶

That kind of intimidation only works only if the people who are targeted remain silent, and officials in positions of power remain unaccountable. That's why we need to speak out and let folks across the country know we won't tolerate hate and violence towards our communities. It starts with demanding that the Governor of Pennsylvania make clear that anti-immigrant hate has no place in Pennsylvania. It's time for him to show leadership now.

About a month ago, my mentor Charlie Leck wrote a piece on the Agents of Hate who fill the airwaves with venomous rumor and innuendo as a means of influencing the electorate. Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, and O’Reilly have built careers on playing to the most basic instincts of the conservative public, whipping their listeners into a frenzy through fear mongering directed at Barack Obama and his supporters. This being America, the fear mongers are protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution and the incredible ratings they generate for their respective media hosts.

These jerks actually make me tremble for the America I love!

It is sad that guys like Shaun Hannity, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and Michael Savage, all of whom have huge listening audiences, are such advocates of absolute hate. One could actually name another half-dozen of these guys. They are not about discussion and dialogue. If a caller disagrees with them they are rude and cruel to that caller. They don’t promote reasonable debate and careful, conscientious thoughtfulness about selecting a President or other electoral choices. Instead they whip their audiences into frenzy by claiming that the opposition is awful, dangerous and mentally unbalanced.

You probably think I'm exaggerating. I am not. I recently listened, thanks to Bill Moyers, to some of their programming. Moyers introduced me to a video that left him in despair. He warned that the language is so hateful some people would have a difficult time dealing with it.

Imagine Glen Beck telling his audience that someone should kill Michael Moore, the liberal film documentary producer. You say it would never happen? Listen to the video I’ll reference in another two paragraphs. Listen to Beck say he’ll provide the gun. Now, these are guys who claim to be the ultimate loyalists. The talker, Neil Boortz, may be the most horrible. Listen to what he says about Muslims and the residents of New Orleans. These are sick guys and they are responsible for making our society sicker and sicker with hate.

I gulped and clicked the button that started the video. It was as Moyer’s described it – shear, unadulterated insanity. More frightening is the fact that millions of people listen to these guys and accept what they say as gospel (what an unfortunate word to use).

Gird your loins! Now make the big click and listen to the hate that these guys promote. It is such a bad thing for our nation because it divides completely and pits citizen against citizen. The video is called Rage on the Radio.

These promoters of hate would have their audiences believe that liberals are enemies of the country – that we are insane perverts. Again, I am not being hyperbolic! If you haven’t clicked and gone and watched the Moyers video, go on back up a paragraph and do it now.

This is what the far right is selling to gullible people who are anxious to have an enemy on whom they can blame all the troubles of the nation.

It frightens the living day-lights out of me. It makes me fear for the life of someone like Barack Obama and it makes me fear for the future of our country.

There are so many reasons for those of us, who truly love our land, to throw all our energies and recourses into winning this upcoming election.

Among the charges that are accepted as dogma among fans of the genre include (i) Senator Obama is a terrorist sympathizer, (ii) Senator Obama will sell out Israel to the Palestinians and Hamas, (iii) Senator Obama is a Muslim, (iv) Senator Obama gave $800,000 to ACORN to engage in voter registration fraud, (v) the Democrats are trying to stuff the ballot box in Ohio and steal the election using ACORN and its fraudulent voter registration tactics, (vi) Senator Obama will increase taxes on anyone making more than $42,000 a year, (vii) Senator Obama will push through a Canadian health care system where the government will dictate our medical care, (viii) Senator Obama will fine small businesses that do not provide health care for their employees, (ix) Michelle Obama is an unpatriotic angry Black bitch and (x) Senator Obama supports the anti-American “God Damn America” attitude of his long time pastor, Jeremiah Wright. There are many more core beliefs held by the Right; ten is a nice number to deal with and these rolled off my fingertips.

The problem, of course, is that fear mongering has a way of morphing into hate mongering and persons of little intellect, i.e., the audience in question, has a bad habit of wanting to act on their hate. I share Charlie’s sentiment express in his September 17th blog, “It frightens the living day-lights out of me. It makes me fear for the life of someone like Barack Obama and it makes me fear for the future of our country.”

I had already started working on this piece when I watched the third presidential debate tonight. As upset as I was beforehand, the cold reality of how far out of hand this has gotten hit home when the debate participants actually discussed before a national television audience the fact that attendees at McCain/Palin gatherings were chanting for the death of Senator Obama. Again, worked into a frenzy of hate by the blind acceptance of right wing propaganda, the Republican rallies have taken on a mob mentality that, if uttered publicly or privately on an individual basis would result in a visit from the Secret Service and possible criminal prosecution. Since Senator McCain would not disavow his running mate’s characterization of Senator Obama, allow me: Accusing Senator Obama of caring so little for his country that he pals around with terrorists as part of your campaign rhetoric is akin to shouting “fire” in a crowded theater. It goes beyond the pale of the First Amendment and one may not feign ignorance that the characterization may instigate a violent response and encourage extremely misguided vigilante behavior.

The contemporary impact of right wing hate mongering is bad enough. As Senator Obama suggested tonight, it eliminates the ability to have a meaningful discussion of the issues that must be addressed as this country slides toward third world status. Yes, we have a ways to go down that slide. But if you think in terms of not being able to provide adequate health care to our citizenry, of not being able to provide gainful employment opportunities to able-bodied workers, of not having a monetary system that serves as the world’s standard and, rather, is propped up by the lending whims of foreign investors, or of not being able to have any meaningful influence on world affairs because we have bankrupted ourselves in the eyes of other nations morally, militarily and monetarily, then you begin to realize what the stakes are. More than anytime in our history since, perhaps, the election of 1860, we stand on the brink as a nation. A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand.

The ten, “top of my head” characterizations of Senator Obama and his supporters itemized above are all nonsense, easily, and appropriately, dismissible with only a modicum of research accessible to anyone with a computer and an Internet connection. It is incumbent upon all of us who have something better to do than sit around listening to The Savage Nation or watching the “Fair and Balanced” Fox network to speak out against baseless character assassination and the politics of destruction.

Today, when a friend enamored with right wing conspiracy theories fretted over Senator Obama’s plan to steal the election using ACORN operatives, I sent him a link to an article quoting Ohio Republicans admitting that safeguards prevented any meaningful fraudulent influence on the Ohio polling. When he made the statement that Senator McCain had never had anything to do with ACORN, I sent him a link to an article describing Senator McCain’s past support for the work of ACORN, even delivering the keynote address at an ACORN sponsored event, complete with photographs of the grateful Senator sitting beaming next to his ACORN host in appreciation for being given a platform to discuss immigration policy.

We can do this. We can demand better of our public servants. In Minnesota, Senator Coleman has disavowed negative campaigning. Whatever his motives, his change of tactics was clearly influenced by the public's negative reaction to the heretofore destructive tone of his campaign. Senator McCain's defense of Senator Obama's character in Lakeville, Minnesota last Friday, delivered to an unidentified, disheveled supporter who is probably thanking God that her back was to the camera, was a start, a seedling planted for a crop of civility. Perhaps Senator McCain, too, realizes we reap what we sow.

It is getting harder and harder to be a Nellie Forbush cock-eyed optimist. But I can't get it out of my heart. This heart is sentimental and patriotic. This heart thinks The American President, scripted by Aaron Sorkin of subsequent West Wing fame, is one of the best movies ever made (partly because this heart is also in incurable romantic). During this campaign, I often think of the climactic speech in The American President, delivered by President Andrew Shepard to a speechless press corps. Sorkin has his American President go on the offensive and, as if with 2008 in mind, speak the truth about his conservative opponent's dishonest campaign tactics. When I watch that speech, time and again, my eyes swell and I find the strength to believe that those of us who see conservative negativism as a desperate attempt to make up for the absence of substantive solutions to our problems are on the right track.

These are Photo Slide Shows of the First and Second Protests against Hate Speech, Defamation and Misinformation in the Media, specifically targeting Michael Savage / Clear Channel Communications / KNEW 910AM, at their Broadcasting Booth / Offices, located in the 340 Townsend Street in San Francisco California.

The first was held on August 15, 2007, during which we presented a written request to meet with the local Management of CCC to ask them to put a stop to the hateful language used by Mr. Savage against our community, specially against immigrants, for whom Michael Savage reserved his most poisonous and vitriolic attacks, furthermore, we requested a start to negotiations toward achieving a more inclusive make up of their personnel and staff, so it would reflect the diversity of the local communities they are obligated to serve, as per conditions for their broadcasting license as stipulated under the FCC rules.

After a year of refusals by the local Management of KNEW / CCC to engage in serious negotiations, the Hispanic / Latino Anti-Defamation Coalition SF, was compelled to make another attempt to call to their attention the seriousness of our requests, which one year later have become demands, to have their unrepentant-star-hatemongering-shock-jock, Michael Savage, removed from their programming lineup.

So, on September 23, 2008, members of the Hispanic / Latino Community, allied with other Communities and Organizations under the banner of the HLADC-SF, revisited the matter by demonstrating their frustration and righteous indignation at the callous refusals of KNEW / CCC / Michael Savage, to even make an effort in good faith, to hear our grievances and requests, that by now are demands, to stop the wrongs that are committed daily against us by Michael Savage / Clear Channel Communications / KNEW.

We hold Clear Channel Communications / KNEW / Michael Savage directly responsible for the increase of violent hate crimes perpetrated against our under-siege community.

Dozens of demonstrators in their majority Hispanic, congregated in front of the building of Clear Channel Radio, in the 340 of Townsend street, in San Francisco, California, to protest the radial station that allows the transmission in national chain to the United States, of a program of commentaries with an issue that has gained the repudiation of the immigrants generally, but very particularly of the Hispanics, to those who it attacks with excessive viciousness and which shows a shameless racism, this reason is why it is catalogued as the enemy number one of the immigrant community, the controvertial 'personality' is Michael Alan Weiner, that as the delinquents, is AKA " Michael Savage" , as proclaimed by himself with this apparent 'pseudonim.'

A people united, will never be defeated

The demonstrators arrived from all the points in Northern California, many of them in a train originating from San Jose, in the South Bay of San Francisco, which was boarded by dozens of Hispanos in the several stations of the line and arrived at 4 of afternoon, the precise hour programmed to start the demonstration and that was baptized as " The Hispanic Dignity Train".

The event was led by the conductor of radio, the colleague, Marcos Gutiérrez, who from his program "Made in California" that is transmitted from 1010 A.M. in San Francisco and 990 A.M. in Sacramento, and who made the call for the second consecutive year to protest against the pseudo commentator, with the support of his faithful radio listeners, several organizations and unions from NorCal.

Gutiérrez, in one of his interventions placed emphasis on the injurious and detrimental effects resulting from the attacks against the immigrants, from racists like Michael Savage, which have increased the attacks of hatred against them, according to statistical reports from the police and a recent FBI report.

The demonstrators delivered speeches of denunciation against Savage for the string of insults and calumnies that pour out everyday against the immigrants. Once more they demanded to the radio station the cancellation of this program and threatened an economic boicott against the sponsoring companies of the program.

Amongst the protesters, there were also Anglos-Saxons who also support the immigrants, specially our undocumented people, who as some speakers said " They break lomo" (Lomo=Back) - working hard to give growth to this nation which is also ours by adoption. Among the present of all the ages and sexes, transgender people (transsexuals) who also are victims, repudiated the intolerance and scorn held in the soul of this mental patient.

Shouts of GO AWAY ANIMAL were heard. An adolescent, Sean Griffin, shouted in English and Spanish, " I am son of an Anglo-Saxon father and proudly with a Mexican mother, and I say to you Michael Savage, lárgate" (lárgate=go away). Other children also came out in defense of their parents without legal documents in the nation and some of these interventions were transmitted live by radios 1010 and 990.

Of colleagues of the radios, Hispanic television outlets, and written press, fierce defenders of the immigrants from its spaces, we had the short-sightedness of NOT seeing anybody/anything… would have they been on special assignments somewhere out there?

This protest, to say that it was successful, exceptionally pacific and orderly, is saying too little and, supported by the sounds of the horns of the very many cars that circulate around that busy street, but for it's organizers, we will say that they must throw in more desire to the issue, because once per year it is like what the saying and the song of the Puma say: " One swallow doesn't make spring and a gull loses itself in the sea".

THE PROFILE OF THE SAVAGE

So that you know who this old poisonous old man is, we will tell you that he was born of a father with the same name, Michael Alan Weiner, of a Jewish family of Russian origins that lived in the Bronx and died to the 50 years of a heart attack. When Savage (Salvaje el equivalente en Español) writes or comments on his childhood he describes as "diffícult" started working from early age and blames his father to whom he describes as " Rude and with a profane personality" , as to the "profane" the way Michael judges his ancestor means he is telling him a lot: "disrespectful of the sacred, ignorant of everything, dishonest, bold, libertine and he only left out describing his father as a son of a b… "

I take the opportunity here to tell you dear Michael, that you give feelings of pity that you have been an abused boy, that you give feelings of pity that you keep such trauma that will accompany you to the grave and that this follows the abominable hatred that you feel for your fellow human beings, but, Why with our children? Since you remember that you said that children of undocumented parents were faking suffering of autism for gain. In the Bible, dear Michael, says that " With the stick that you measure, you shall be measured" and as you judge without reserve the damage that you can do and not moved by anything, I do the same with you, but without lowering at your levels nor to your condition of chronic congenital psychopath, gotten worse now at your 66 years by a galloping senile dementia.

Michael Savage, I share with the shout that people gave in front of the building of the radio chain from which they allow relief to your necrotic spirit and your nauseous morality, definitively YOU ARE an ANIMAL, because you do not meet the qualities to catalog you to be a human being, and to qualify you as a jerk, would take away dimension to the barbarities that you think and say.

To those at Clear Channel Radio, what a shame gentlemen to allow a " Yerbero" (This is what the Savage studied, ah and anthropology, but it did not serve him well because he didn't discovered himself in his own reality "not human nor social"), I was saying that they allow him to spit his microphones in total unawareness of even a minimum of ethical behavior with his audience, and if they boast that this individual has an audience from coast to coast of 8 million and sell a few dollars more, I will be denouncing their "Star" through the radio and television stations in which I work and that covers all of the Mexican Republic and 16 states in the United States with a modest audience of 86 million people. Be worthy gentlemen and not accomplices to this racist, unless you are one also. Have a good day gentlemen, and may God bless and forgive you.

Docenas de manifestantes en su mayoría hispanos se congregaron frente al edificio de Clear Channel Radio, en el 340 de la calle Townsend, en San Francisco, California, para protestar con la estacion radial que permite la transmisión en cadena nacional a Estados Unidos, de un programa de comentarios que hace un sujeto que se ha ganado el repudio de los inmigrantes en general, pero muy particularmente de los hispanos, a quienes ataca con saña desmedida y haciendo gala de un racismo descarado, por lo que lo califican como el enemigo numero uno de la comunidad inmigrante, el controvertido personaje es Michael Alan Weiner, ALIAS como los delincuentes "Michael Savage" y a como el mismo se apodó, dizque pseudónimo.

Un pueblo unido, jamas será vencido

Los manifestantes llegaron desde todos los puntos del norte de California, muchos de ellos en un tren que proveniente de San José, sur de la bahía de San Francisco, que fue abordado por decenas de hispanos en las varias estaciones del trayecto y arribó a las 4 de la tarde, la hora precisa en que se habia programado la demostración y que bautizaron como "El Tren de la Dignidad".

El evento fue liderado por el conductor de radio, el colega, Marcos Gutiérrez, quien desde sus programas "Hecho en California" que se emiten por la 1010 AM en San Francisco y 990 AM en Sacramento, e hizo por segundo año seguido la convocatoria para protestar contra el pseudo comentarista y con apoyo de sus fieles radios escuchas y varias organizaciones comunitarias y sindicatos del norte del estado.

Gutiérrez, en una de sus intervenciones puso énfasis en lo nocivo y perjudicial que han resultado los ataques contra los inmigrantes de parte de racistas como Michael Savage, y que ha acrecentado los ataques de odio contra ellos y conforme reportes estadísticos de la policía y un reciente informe del FBI.

Los manifestantes pronunciaron discursos de denuncia contra Savage, por la sarta de injurias y calumnias que verte todos los dias contra los inmigrantes. Exigieron una vez más a la cadena radial la cancelacion de este programa y amenazan con causarles un boicott economico contra las empresas patrocinadoras de la radio.

Entre los que protestaron hubo también anglos que apoyan a los inmigrantes en especial a nuestros indocumentados, que como algunos oradores dijeron "Se rompen el lomo" trabajando fuerte para darle crecimiento a esta nacion y que es nuestra por adopción. Entre los presentes de todas las edades y sexos, repudiaron personas transgéneros (transexuales) quienes también son víctimas de la intolerancia y desprecio que almacena el alma de este enfermo mental.

Se escucharon gritos de VETE ANIMAL. Un adolescente Sean Griffin, gritó en inglés y español, "soy hijo de un padre anglosajon y orgullosamente con una madre mexicana, y te digo Michael Savage, lárgate" . Otros niños también salieron en defensa de sus padres sin documentos legales en la nación y algunas de estas intervenciones fueron transmitidas en vivo por las radios 1010 y 990.

De colegas de las radios, medios escritos y televisivos hispanos, fieros defensores de los inmigrantes desde sus espacios, tuvimos la miopia de NO ver a ninguno…estarian en algunas asignaciones especiales por ahí?

Esta protesta, de mas esta decir que fue exitosa y excepcionalmente ordenada y pacífica, apoyada por el sonar de los claxon de muchisimos autos que circulan por esa traficada calle, pero para sus organizadores diremos que le echen más gana al asunto, pues una vez por año es como el dicho y canción del Puma de que "Una golondrina no hace verano y una gaviota se pierde en el mar".

EL PERFIL DEL SALVAJE

Para que usted sepa quien es este anciano venenoso les referimos que nacio de un padre con su mismo nombre, Michael Alan Weiner, de una familia judía con los orígenes rusos que vivía en el Bronx y murió a los 50 años de un ataque al corazón. Cuando Savage (Salvaje equivalente en español) escribe o comenta sobre su niñez, la describe como "difícil" que trabajo desde corta edad y culpa a su padre al que califica de "Rudo y personalidad profana", en lo de "profano" como juzga Michael a su progenitor le quiere decir mucho: "irrespetuoso de lo sagrado, ignorante de todo, deshonesto, atrevido, libertino y solo le faltó calificar a su padre de hijo de p…"

Aprovecho aquí para decirte querido Michael, que das lastima que hayas sido un niño abusado, que das lastima que conserves semejante trauma que te acompañará hasta la tumba y que de esto se desprende el abominable odio que sientes por tus semejantes, pero, ¿Por qué con nuestros niños? Ya que recuerdas que dijiste que niños de padres de indocumentados fingian padecer de audismo para sacar provecho. En la Biblia, querido Michael, dice que "Con la vara que mides, sereis medido" y como tu juzgas sin reparo al daño que puedas hacer y sin inmutarte por nada, yo hago lo mismo contigo, pero sin bajarme a tus niveles ni a tu condición de psicopata congénito crónico, empeorado ahora a tus 66 años por una demencia senil cabalgante.

Michael Savage, comparto con el grito que la gente dió frente al edificio de la cadena de radio en que te permiten el desahogo de tu espíritu necrótico y nauseabunda moral, definitivamente ERES UN ANIMAL, pues no reunes las cualidades para catalogarte de ser humano y calificarte de patán sería quitarle dimensión a las barbaridades que piensas y dices.

A los de Clear Channel Radio, qué vergüenza señores permitir a un "Yerbero" (Eso estudió El Salvaje, ah y antropología, pero no le sirvió porque no se descubre asi mismo en su realidad "humana ni social"), le permiten, decia, a escupir sus micrófonos a total desconocedor del mínimo comportamiento con ética para su audiencia, y si alardean que este individuo tiene una audiencia de costa a costa de 8 millones y venden unos cuantos dolares más, yo estaré denunciando a su "estrella" por la cadena radial y televisiva en que trabajo y que cubre toda la república mexicana y 16 estados en Estados Unidos con una modesta audiencia de 86 millones de personas. Sean dignos señores y no complices a este racista, a menos que ustedes lo sean también. Pasen buen día señores, que Dios los bendiga y los perdone.

BILL MOYERS JOURNAL takes a tough look at the hostile industry of "Shock Jock" media with a hard-hitting examination of its effects on our nation's political discourse. The JOURNAL traveled to Knoxville, where a recent shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church has left the pastor asking what role hateful speech from popular right-wing media personalities may have played in the tragedy. "A lot of people are hurling insults from the safety of television studios, the safety of radio studio, the safety of cyberspace," says Rev. Chris Buice, "So that's a void in our community — the chance to be in the same room and to have these exchanges and remember the humanity of the person on the other side." The Reach of Talk Radio Talk radio is loud — very loud. According to TALKERS magazine, the leading publication of the talk radio industry, Rush Limbaugh attracts more than 14 million listeners across the nation each week, one of the largest audiences in any broadcast medium; Sean Hannity, over 13 million; Michael Savage, more than 8 million. With such a large and devoted audience, the topics the hosts focus on may significantly impact the national discussion. Media expert Kathleen Hall Jamieson noted during the last election cycle that talk radio may well wield the power to set the agenda: When something gets into mainstream media, it has a half-life of about 30 seconds. Where something that moves into talk radio can have a half-life of two or three years. Not all talk radio is politically conservative, but in TALKER magazine's list of top ten personalities by audience, nine are conservative, and one is lifestyle and finance. And, presidents and policy-makers alike know that the power of talk radio is important to energizing the conservative base. But talk radio's agenda is not always in step with the administration. For example, the top-rated conservative hosts opposed a 2007 compromise immigration bill backed by President Bush. According to a report by the non-partisan Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ), Limbaugh, Hannity, and Savage devoted the single largest chunk of their airtime to immigration in the second quarter of 2007, with immigration consuming 16% of the airtime of conservative talk radio as a whole. The PEJ stopped short of saying the hosts helped kill the bill, but they did report that others felt that way: "Talk radio is running America," complained Mississippi Republican Senator Trent Lott. "We have to deal with that problem." On June 28—more than 40 days after the introduction of a compromise immigration bill backed by President Bush and some senators—the year's most ambitious domestic legislative initiative was defeated in the Senate. Lott was not alone in attributing the bill's defeat to talk radio. Some Democrats even talked of reviving the long-repealed Fairness Doctrine as a way of potentially balancing the politics on conservative-dominated talk radio. In talk circles, this became known as the "Hush Rush" bill, a reference to conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who was a vocal critic of the immigration bill. But others argue the conservative talkers are beholden to their audience — that they amplify rather than invent conservative sentiments. The NEW YORK TIMES reports: "When conservatives are agitated at the president, radio hosts feel pressured to stand with the conservatives against the president to prove their independence," said Tim Graham, an analyst at the Media Research Center, a conservative news monitoring group. Hate speech in the media A threat to the internal security of the U.S.

As hate speech spirals, a local group of community activists are organizing a demonstration in San Francisco against shock jock Michael Savage. The group, Hispanic / Latino Anti-Defamation Coalition SF, plans to rally in front of the building which houses radio station KNEW-AM where Savage transmits his nationally-syndicated program.

On his program, people hear Savage call for troops on the street "to protect us from the scourge of illegal immigrants who are running rampant across America, killing our police for sport, raping, murdering like a scythe across America while the liberal psychos are telling us they come here to work." Or that autism is a "fraud, a racket, that in 99 percent of cases is a brat who hasn’t been told to cut their act out" and to stop being ‘morons‘, a way where minority children get welfare and extra help in school, and who also tells fasting immigrant students "to starve to death, then we won’t have a problem."

These kind of statements act as fuel for people who are already angry, resentful and violent. Take, for instance, Jim David Adkisson, who entered the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun, killed two people and wounded six others during the presentation of a children's musical. In his car, police found a four-page letter in which he expressed his hatred of the "liberal movement’, and wrote he targeted the church "because of its liberal teachings" and his belief that "all liberals should be killed" because they were "ruining the country."

Inside Adkisson’s home, officers found "Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder" by radio talk show host Michael Savage; "Let Freedom Ring" by talk show host Sean Hannity; and the book, "The O'Reilly Factor," by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly. These three continuously demonize liberals, immigrants and others.

On Glenn Beck’s nationally syndicated radio show, The Glenn Beck Program, he read an "ad" produced and posted by subscribers to his website, for a refinery that turns Mexicans into fuel (Mexinol).

Neil Boortz suggests giving nuclear waste to illegal Mexican immigrants to take back to Mexico and tell them "it’ll warm tortillas", plus they will be easy to spot because of the "glow" if they try to return.

Savage warns politicians about illegal immigrant "vermin."

Shock jocks insist their rants are not hurting anyone and that they are not inciting hate attacks. Meanwhile disenfranchised groups continue to be targeted. Take, for instance, the savage beating of Luis Eduardo Ramirez Zavala by a group of four young white males in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania on July 12.

An eyewitness to the beating who happens to be a retired police officer, heard the youths telling Ramirez’s friends to "get out of Shenandoah or the same thing would happen" to them.
"We saw a bunch of kids walking away and screaming things like "‘Go back to Mexico.’ We called the police," said Arielle Garcia, 17, a friend of Ramirez who was at the scene; Luis Eduardo died about 30 hours later.

Legislation and programs designed to provide basic human rights and services regardless of legal status are being curtailed or dismantled, while punitive anti-immigrant legislation is being enacted in localities in all the states and a number of hate groups and the violence leveled against minorities is on the rise. Human rights organizations are under attack, demonized for allegedly helping ‘criminals’

All of the above, plus immensely more, is made possible by the poisoning of the minds of millions of Americans, who are bombarded daily with outrageously false and inflammatory claims, designed to prejudice public opinion against groups and entire communities without allowing the opportunity to present opposing views and facts, which would refute the propaganda full of lies, misinformation and disinformation.
