News from GlennBeckistan: Glenn Beck, laughingstock

Share
Beck keeps climbing, or going down as the case may be, the ladder of bad journalism, his motto and MO of 'anything goes as long I advance the Right Wing pro-Corporatist Agenda' hit him smack in the lies-spewing-cavern that he calls his mouth, to the point that he had to apologize to his audience for 'wasting an hour of their time' with his much ballyhooed 'interview' with Congressman Eric "It is true, I groped them" Massa.

The much publicized and much expected non-event proved a few 'unexpected by Beck' facts, yeah, we all know that for him facts are irrelevant, 1. He is not a Journalist, 2. He is not a reporter, 3. He is lousy at interviewer, 4. When he doesn't get the expected answers, has absolutely no idea what to do, among others.

But above all, he proved, beyond the shadow of any doubt for anyone who can see, hear and draw conclusions, his absolute ineptitude and how bad an idea is to put together two unprincipled and clueless individuals with a preconceived agenda which is devoid in facts.

I can say that one positive result came out of it, they sure did ample damage to their agenda, specially when Congressman Massa told Beck that the only way to change the politics in Washington is to enact Campaign Finance Reform, har, har, har, it was very funny to see how it took all the air out of Beck, when what he opposes was promoted on his show -- That sure was the last thing Glenn wanted to hear, besides giving Beck nothing useful to use against his preferred targets, Massa promoted reform that hurts Beck's Corporatist Masters.

For me personally, I feel happy to be contradicted, RightWingNut Media can be entertaining, by accident of course, when the Law of Unintended Consequences makes an appearance, I expect in the upcoming days and weeks, some more entertainment from GlennBeckistan when the host gives us a front seat row to his usual intellectual acrobatics to spin the gargantuan flop he made us privy to.

Well, it's not like Michelle Malkin didn't try to warn him.

On his radio show yesterday, conservative blogger Malkin and Beck got into an extended tiff because Malkin didn't think it made sense for Beck to devote his entire Fox News show to his Eric Massa interview. It's true that Malkin based her case on political considerations. (i.e. Why give a Democrat that kind of attention?) But whatever her rationale, it turned out Malkin was giving Beck really good advice.

Of course, he ignored it. (Click on the audio here and listen to how Beck became increasingly annoyed when somebody like Malkin dared question his judgment.) Beck knew what he was doing, thank you very much. He'd personally talked to Massa on the phone, and devoting an hour of cable TV time to him was exactly the right thing to do.

Well, in one sense, Beck was right, because yesterday's colossal flop might just make television history. It might go down as one of the most pointlessly absurd -- and yes, truly unwatchable -- hours in cable news. Last night, the snickering had already reached epic levels. And with the can't-watch-TV performance, Beck most likely took the Massa issue off the table for Republicans, since the whole story now looks more like a comedy than an actual scandal.

And yes, Beck today is a national laughingstock. But honestly, is anyone surprised?

In my column this week, I noted this characteristic about today's unhinged, anti-Obama right wing, which Beck so perfectly personifies [emphasis added]:

Consumed with Obama Derangement Syndrome, 'wingers literally cannot help themselves. Just this weekend, one prominent, albeit unhinged, right-wing site branded Obama as "suicide-bomber-in-chief." They've removed all sensible filters, which means the crazy talk flows 24-7.

It's that complete lack of common sense that led Beck to think Massa would make for interesting TV for an hour. The odds that a 60-minute interview with a resigning congressman would make for great TV were never above 5 percent. And the odds that it wold be a catastrophic failure always hovered around 20 percent. But narcissist Beck, ignoring broadcasting common sense, plowed ahead anyway.

Question: Did anyone on Beck's staff try to talk him out of this daffy idea? Recall that recently Beck's senior producer, a longtime Fox News exec, was unceremoniously shown the door. And I know industry chatter was that Beck didn't want the guy around and that Beck doesn't think he needs somebody outside of his very tight clique overseeing his show.

Well, last night, Beck found out he was wrong. And Beck found out what happens when you program cable news without any commonsense filters. And last night, television viewers saw what happened when narcissism rules and there's no adult supervision on a cable news set.

Result: Glenn Beck becomes a national laughingstock.

UPDATED: From the sad-but-true category is the realization that Beck's Hindenburg performance last night will probably do more damage to his reputation, at least among Beltway scribes, than the endless falsehoods and vicious smears he's launched. Why? Because last night, Beck was guilty of the deadliest media sin of all: producing god-awful television.

UPDATE RE: Counter-Protests to the "TEA Party Against AMNESTY For Illegal Aliens November 14, 2009!"

Share

First of all, a big thank you to Modesto CA, St. Paul MN and SF CA, cities where counter-protests have been announced, hoping that in more cities, people of good will, will be standing up later on today to the lies, misinformation and intolerance of the anti-immigrant forces.
It'd be greatly appreciated in the event there is a counter-protest in your city, to please let us know.
Also, if you happen to know the numbers of TEA Party extremists who show up for their protests, hope you let us know that too, we expect them to grossly inflate their numbers, so far on their "Tea Parties Against Amnesty and Illegal Immigration Nov. 14 (ROUND 1)" Website they claim "NUMBER OF TEA PARTIES FOR NOV 14: 53, NUMBER OF TEA PARTY AGAINST AMNESTY SUPPORTERS: 5396", ( <== This is a Nationwide number) but in the words of a friend of ours, Porter: "Aurora, Thanks for the post on Willy Gheen's little gathering next Saturday. This moron is a pompous blowhard, taking credit for others work. He couldn't organize three hookers for a bachelor party with the help of their pimps. I would like photo evidence to counter what is sure to be Gheen's claims of great success. He'll be lucky if he can get a handful at each event."
So, we will see.
The best to you all and thank you for whatever you do for the people who need our help the most.

PS:
Some tidbits on what they are saying and doing:

Media: Angry right-wingers are important; angry libs are annoying

FROM: MEDIA MATTERS FOR AMERICA

By: Eri Boehler
August 25, 2009 8:21 am ET

I guess Howard Dean was just ahead of his time.

When the liberal anti-war candidate ran for the White House in 2003 and 2004, the Beltway press was uniformly clear that Dean had an "anger" issue. When Dean launched his campaign and gave voice to the hundreds of thousands of activists who had marched and protested against the Iraq war, the media elites did not approve.

As early as June 2003, The New York Times was fretting over whether Dean's "angry message" would be his downfall. "All the Rage," read a Newsweek headline on a Dean profile.

And in two features in the summer of 2003, The Washington Post described Dean as "abrasive," "flinty," "cranky," "arrogant," "disrespectful," "fiery," "red-faced," a "hothead," "testy," "short-fused," "angry," "worked up," and "fired up." And trust me, none of those adjectives was used in a complimentary way. In fact, the Post took pains to distinguish Dean's anger from that of then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, whom the paper termed "brilliantly cranky."

Bad luck for Dean, because back during the Bush years, there was really no worse crime, at least in the eyes of the Beltway press, than being "angry." (Especially being an angry Democrat.) It was practically a deal breaker. Serious people simply didn't conduct themselves that way in American politics. They didn't let their runaway partisan emotions get the best of them.

But oh my, how times have changed! Suddenly this summer, as right-wing mini-mobs turn health care forums into free-for-alls, as unhinged political rage flows in the streets, and as the Nazi and Hitler rhetoric flies, anger is in. Suddenly anger is good. It's authentic. It's newsworthy. Reading and watching the mini-mob news coverage, the media message seems clear: Angry speaks to the masses.

Instead of being turned off by the displays of passion the way they had been when liberal protesters took to the streets prior to the Iraq war, media elites have been touting the mini-mob trend as a "phenomenon" (USA Today) staffed by a "citizen army" (Bloomberg News).

And make no mistake, the health care mini-mobs have been showered with a massive amount of media coverage. During the week of August 10-16, the topic of health care, and specifically the politics and the protests of health care, accounted for a staggering 62 percent of all cable news coverage, according to the Pew Research Center's weekly survey. My guess is that you would be hard-pressed to find a single week during the run-up to the Iraq war when liberal anti-war protests accounted for just 6 percent of the cable news coverage.

Why the gaping disparity? And how come Dean's anti-war anger was out of bounds, but mini-mob anger is perfectly acceptable? How come liberal anti-war protesters were shunned by the press, but the mini-mobs are showered with incessant coverage? It's because apparently when angry -- and overwhelmingly white -- conservatives protest, they come attached with a direct line to the American psyche. Liberals, though, most certainly do not.

Bottom line: Liberal protesters don't tell us anything about the mood of America. But angry right-wingers do, according to the press.

That glaring double standard is part of a long-running Beltway press trend in which media elites lash out at angry liberals, regardless of whether they're right or wrong. The trend was highlighted again just last week when news broke that former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge admitted that very senior players in the Bush White House urged him to raise the nation's terror alert system for purely political reasons. Writing at The Atlantic, Marc Ambinder defended journalists who scorned liberal Bush critics years ago when they made that exact same claim about the nation's terror warning system. Journalists were right to dismiss the allegation, wrote Ambinder, "because these folks based their assumption on gut hatred for President Bush, and not on any evaluation of the raw intelligence."

Salon's Glenn Greenwald quickly noted, "As always: even when the dirty leftist hippies are proven right, they're still Shrill, unSerious Losers who every decent person and 'journalist' scorns."

Please note Ambinder's emphasis on "gut hatred" of Bush (even if the writer did later retract the phrase). For elite journalists during the Bush administration, liberal hatred of Bush represented the most conspicuous red flag that signaled certain political players were not serious. Why? Because they were fueled by hatred. Serious people did not have hatred. They weren't driven by out-of-control passion.

Now, please compare that defining media elite principle from the Bush era to the mini-mobs and the ugly free-for-alls they unleashed this summer. Judging based on the insight into the Beltway media's mentality that Ambinder provided, the press dismissed Bush's liberal critics because they were too emotional, too full of "hatred," and not paying attention to the facts. You mean sort of like the anti-Obama mini-mob members who hang politicians in effigy, turn town hall forums into fact-free shriek-fests, arrive with loaded guns, wave swastika posters, and yell out "Heil Hitler"?

If ever there's ever been a political movement fueled by, and carefully constructed around, irrational "gut hatred," it's today's right-wing mini-mobs. But you don't hear much from Village pundits like Ambinder about the "gut hatred" of Obama, do you? That doesn't seem to turn off pundits, reporters, or producers.

In truth, right-wing "gut hatred" has become the news story of the summer. It's being celebrated and rebroadcast all season long. That deranged "gut hatred" of a new president barely halfway through his first year doesn't delegitimize the protesters in the eyes of the Beltway press in the way the same press corps seemed to write off anti-war protesters as being fringe radicals. (Too angry!) The "gut hatred" of Obama is what makes the mini-mob news.

As Media Matters senior fellow Duncan Black wrote last week at his blog, Eschaton, in relation to the Tom Ridge story:

Sometimes it's a bit hard to remember just how nutty the world was in those post-9/11 days. Suggesting that Bush was using the terror alert for political purposes would have made you a crazy person, the mere suggestion of it would've put you outside the bounds of acceptable discourse.

Sort of like suggesting today that the federal government might soon be in the business of selectively killing the elderly, right? Think again. High-profile conservatives who pushed the "death panel" nonsense, which fired up the mini-mobs, have not been shoved to the sidelines. Instead, they've been politely fact-checked on occasion.

Media to liberal war protesters: Go away!

And just so there's no doubt in people's mind, the blanket coverage the mini-mobs are lapping up (i.e. the mobs are hugely important!) stands in stark contrast to the way the press often did its best to ignore liberal protesters who spoke out against the war in Iraq.

For instance, in October 2002, when more than 100,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., to oppose the war, The Washington Post put the story not on the front page, but in the Metro section with, as the paper's ombudsman later lamented, "a couple of ho-hum photographs that captured the protest's fringe elements."

For that same 2002 anti-war rally, The New York Times also bungled its reporting. The day after the event, the newspaper published a small article on Page 8, which was accompanied by a photo that was larger than the article itself. And in the article, the Times falsely reported that "fewer people attended than organizers had said they hoped for."

Let's watch and see how the Post deals with the mini-mob protest slated for September 12 in Washington, D.C., sponsored by Dick Armey's FreedomWorks. If 100,000-200,000 people turn out, let's see whether the Post keeps that story off the front page. (Yeah, right.) And let's see if the Times runs a brief article on Page 8 and reports that "fewer people attended" than organizers had hoped.

And remember how some in the mainstream press in 2005 treated anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, whose son Casey had been killed while serving in Iraq? An op-ed writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution claimed that "Cindy Sheehan evidently thinks little of her deceased son." The piece also attacked her as being "disgraceful" and her actions as "near-treasonous."

On MSNBC, Norah O'Donnell asked a guest if Sheehan had become "a tool of the left," while pressing another guest on whether it was wise to be associated with the "anti-war extremists" camped out in Crawford, Texas, near President Bush's ranch. The Washington Post's Dana Milbank wondered if Sheehan would be remembered as a modern-day Lyndon LaRouche, the fringe political figure who's been accused of being a cult leader and fascist. Later that month, Milbank gave prominent display in the Post to a right-wing activist who accused Sheehan of being a communist.

On September 24, 2005, Sheehan helped lead a massive anti-war rally in Washington, D.C., which drew between 100,000 and 200,000 participants, making it the largest U.S. demonstration since the war began. As part of the protest weekend, Sheehan, along with about 370 anti-war protesters, got herself arrested outside the White House. That night, NBC's Nightly News completely ignored the arrests. (The Post gave the story 600 words on B1.) The evening newscasts on ABC and CBS mentioned the arrests only briefly, and CBS downplayed the numbers involved. It reported that Sheehan was arrested along with "dozens" of others. (What? As in 31 dozen?) And the next morning, ignoring the fact that nearly 400 people chose to be arrested in order to protest the war, CNN reported that "Sheehan and several others were arrested" [emphasis added].

If, come September 12, nearly 400 angry anti-Obama demonstrators decide to get arrested outside the White House, let's see if Nightly News boycotts the story. And let's see if CNN reports it was "several" protesters who got hauled away.

Let's see if the press continues to treat angry (unhinged) conservative protesters as inherently important and newsworthy after having spent years dismissing angry liberals as insignificant and out of the mainstream.

Randall Terry vs. Sonia Sotomayor

Browsing about Judge Sonia Sotomayor, I came a Post on a Forum I had not visited before, it is named 'ff free though forum', it has the following entry that I thought other people should read, it was posted by The Lone Ranger and he really washes Randall Terry's filthy laundry.

People as Randall is what passes today as Christianity, this malady is what we confront today, it is monstrous, sick, warped and deadly, this is what we are facing, but the real crime is that there is a legion of Hatemongers on the Media giving air space so sickos like Terry can spew their hatefully pernicious messages.
Randall Terry of "Operation Rescue" spoke locally yesterday. He was urging people to oppose Sonia Sotomayor's appointment to the Supreme Court. If he gave any specific reasons to oppose her nomination, the local paper didn't mention them.

I strongly suspect it's because Sotomayor hasn't said anything to indicate that she's a virulent opponent of Roe v. Wade. I'm sure that Terry would oppose any Supreme Court nominee who wasn't.
***
What struck me as interesting was Terry's comment that Obama is "this baby killing monster in the White House." He also told listeners to "Think of death when you think of Sotomayor."

Now, see, I'm reasonably certain that Obama has never before killed a baby. Or, for that matter, performed an abortion.

So how can we possibly make sense of Terry's claim that Obama is a "baby killing monster"? I can only presume that he means to emphasize that the words and actions of public figures have impact, and that someone who's a prominent public figure therefore has a duty and responsibility to consider that what (s)he says and does will influence the behavior of others.

Ah, that makes sense, and I applaud Terry's understanding that public figures have a responsibility to consider that their words and actions will influence others.
***
So, given this, I'm sure someone can explain to me why Terry goes around openly advocating hatred and murder?
"Intolerance is a beautiful thing...There are people that are politically correct that want to say the cardinal sin of the hour is intolerance and I think that is a bunch of junk."
-- Randall Terry
"Let a wave of intolerance wash over you. I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good.... If a Christian voted for Clinton, he sinned against God. It's that simple.... Our goal is a Christian Nation... we have a biblical duty, we are called by God to conquer this country. We don't want equal time. We don't want Pluralism. We want theocracy."
-- Randall Terry, from The News Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Aug 15, 1993
"When I, or people like me, are running the country, you'd better flee, because we will find you, we will try you, and we will execute you. I mean every word of it. I will make it part of my mission to see to it that they are tried and executed... If we're going to have true reformation in America, it is because men once again, if I may use a worn out expression, have righteous testoserone flowing through their veins. They are not afraid of contempt for their contemporaries. They are not even here to get along. They are here to take over... Somebody like Susan Smith should be dead. She should be dead now. Some people will go, "Well how do you know God doesn't have a wonderful plan for her life?" He does, it's listed in the Bible. His plan for her is that she should be dead."
-- Randall Terry, at the Aug 8, 1995 U.S. Taxpayers Alliance Banquet in Washington DC, talking about physicians who perform abortions and volunteer escorts]

***
More to the point, perhaps somebody, anybody, can explain to me why Terry and his ilk claim to be shocked -- shocked, I tell you -- whenever someone who has listened to their spewing of hate goes out and does something entirely predictable, like shooting up a family planning clinic.

Because, for the life of me, I can't understand how someone can insist that public figures should be held responsible for the effects of their words and actions on others -- but that someone who openly advocates hatred, intolerance and murder should not.

Cheers,

Michael

June 2, 2009— In a lengthy May 28 tirade on the Rob, Arnie & Dawn in the Morning radio show heard in Sacramento, California on KRXQ 98.5 FM and Reno, Nevada on KDOT 104.5 FM, hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States verbally attacked transgender children. While discussing a recent story about a transgender child in Omaha, Nebraska and her parents’ decision to support her transition, the two hosts spent more than 30 minutes explicitly promoting child abuse of and making cruel, dehumanizing and defamatory comments toward transgender children.

Among the comments made by the hosts:

ROB WILLIAMS [11:12]: This is a weird person who is demanding attention. And when it’s a child, all it takes is a hug, maybe some tough love or anything in between. When your little boy said, ‘Mommy, I want to walk around in a dress.’ You tell them no cause that’s not what boys do. But that’s not what we’re doing in this culture.

ARNIE STATES [13:27]: If my son, God forbid, if my son put on a pair of high heels, I would probably hit him with one of my shoes. I would throw a shoe at him. Because you know what? Boys don’t wear high heels. And in my house, they definitely don’t wear high heels.

ROB WILLIAMS [17:45]: Dawn, they are freaks. They are abnormal. Not because they’re girls trapped in boys bodies but because they have a mental disorder that needs to be somehow gotten out of them. That’s where therapy could help them.

ROB WILLIAMS [18:15]: Or because they were molested. You know a lot of times these transgenders were molested. And you need to work with them on that. The point is you don’t allow the behavior. You cure the cause!

ARNIE STATES [21:30]: You got a boy saying, ‘I wanna wear dresses.’ I’m going to look at him and go, ‘You know what? You’re a little idiot! You little dumbass! Look, you are a boy! Boys don’t wear dresses.’

ARNIE STATES [29:22]: You know, my favorite part about hearing these stories about the kids in high school, who the entire high school caters around, lets the boy wear the dress. I look forward to when they go out into society and society beats them down. And they end up in therapy.

To her credit, co-host Dawn Rossi stood up to Williams and States during the segment.

Despite her apparent lack of familiarity with transgender issues, Rossi repeatedly defended transgender people and made an on-air apology for her colleagues’ defamatory remarks.

Arpaio's forced march

"There was all the symbolism necessary for the glory he seeks: hundreds of brown men dressed in prison stripes with pink underwear protruding from their waists, surrounded by even more heavily armed guards and at a given moment an old man gave a signal and they were marched through a pubic street into a tent jail that would house only other men of their color and status surrounded by a high electrified fence...
and the old man pontificated about the law..."

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arapio carried out his threat, his order that “approximately 200 illegal aliens to be chained and marched into a separate area of Tent City, their new place of incarceration until their sentences are served and the illegal aliens are deported to their home countries.”

The march took place on the afternoon of Wednesday February 4, 2009. Over 200 inmates were marched in chains from the Maricopa County Durango Facility Jail to a special unit of Tent city.

The new unit is a segregated facility intended to hold only “illegal aliens”. In a press release sent out earlier Arpaio comments with an obvious attempt at humor: “this population is more adept perhaps at escape. But this is a fence they won’t want to scale because they risk receiving quite a shock-literally.” The fence surrounding the new “illegal alien unit” is the only electrified fence surrounding inmates at Maricopa County’s various jail facilities. This population, Latino’s, are often characterized as being built close to the ground by xenophobes of Arpaio’s ilk so reporters waited vainly for descriptions of anti-tunneling technologies that provided cruel disincentives to escape.

The detainees were marched the short distance, perhaps 200 yards from the Durango Jail to the facility. The parade was on a public road, Gibson Street in Phoenix, but the road was closed to all but the press. The press was notified of the public spectacle the day before and arrangements were made for all media to be present and photograph and film the prisoners. All the major television stations were present as were newspapers and radio and television helicopters hovered overhead. The forced march though short had one intended effect: it was a publicity orgy for the Sheriff.

During his brief conference before hailing the show to begin Arpaio boasted that he was doing the “illegals” a favor

"They like it out here. Okay? They'd rather be here than in a hard facility," he said. "Here, they have the beautiful sun. They can walk around and it's a nice program."

No one in the press corps volunteered to stay a few days.

Coincidentally earlier in the day Arpaio had requested all e-mails, and phone logs from the office of Supervisor Wilcox, her chief of staff and 34 other county officials. The Sheriff ‘s press secretary responded to an inquiry regarding the email request by saying

Here is an official statement regarding your telephonic request for clarification on a letter sent to the Board of Supervisors on January 30, 2009. The records request is for a criminal investigation currently being conducted by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
Ms. Wilcox reiterated that Arpaio’s tactics were intended to intimidate the Hispanic Community and also the Board of Supervisors. “I will not be intimidated by Joe Arpaio.” She said. Given that Arpaio’s twin tormentor, the County Attorney of Maricopa County recently indicted another Supervisor Ms. Wilcox’s statement was particularly courageous and risky. So there would be no misunderstanding she repeated it “I will not be intimidated”

“Humiliating prisoners by putting them on parade began in Imperial Rome. In modern times it’s been widely denounced as a barbarous practice. In March 2003, after the Iraqi government paraded five captured U.S. soldiers in front of television cameras, then U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld protested that it was a violation of the Geneva Convention.

The Phoenix New Times pointed out that Arpaio’s immigrant parade was scheduled for the same day that MCSO Captain Joel Fox was scheduled to appear in court to appeal a $315,000 fine levied against him for channeling an illegal $105,000 campaign donation to the Republican Party in the name of a shadowy entity called the “Sheriff’s Command Association.”

“Which event do you think average news consumers will remember on Thursday – an administrative hearing concerning a convoluted tale of campaign finance laws, or the image of 200 Mexicans in stripes marching in chains down a public street?” asked the New Times. “Yeah, we thought so, too.”

This afternoon in Maricopa County, Ariz., more than 200 Latino immigrants were chained, dressed in prison stripes and forced to march down a public street from a county jail to a detainment camp in the desert outside Phoenix.

Along the way they were filmed by television news crews and guarded by at least 50 Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies, wearing body armor and combat fatigues, armed with shotguns and automatic rifles. At least two canine units were present; a Sheriff’s Department helicopter hovered overhead.

The massive show of force was pure stagecraft for a blatant and dehumanizing publicity stunt orchestrated by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The MCSO gave no indication that any of the immigrant prisoners were particularly violent or presented a grave danger to the public.

According to a MCSO press release, 220 immigrants were transferred to a “Tent City” surrounded by electrified fencing. “This is a population of criminals more adept perhaps at escape,” Arpaio stated in the press release. “But this is a fence they won’t want to scale because they risk receiving a shock – literally.”

The press release further detailed how the immigrants will be treated like any other prisoners, “with two exceptions.” First, “Arpaio wants them to be instructed in American immigration laws, as a way to help them understand that the violation of these laws has serious consequences not only to them but to society as a whole.” Second, immigrants who violate jail rules will be put on a desert chain gang. “This chain gang will work to clean the areas [of the nearby desert] which have been impacted by human trafficking trade,” the release stated.

Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox, an outspoken critic of Arpaio’s immigrant-bashing antics, told the Associated Press that today’s parade was “one of the most inhumane things I’ve ever heard.”

Arpaio is lionized by Minutemen vigilantes and other nativist extremists for his controversial “287(g)” arrangement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which empowers the MCSO, a local agency, to enforce federal immigration law.

Many Latinos taken into custody in recent months by MCSO 287(g) squads have been pulled over for minor traffic violations, such as a broken headlight or an improper lane change, and then arrested when they’re unable to produce proof of citizenship or a valid visa. The operations, several of which have been concentrated in predominately Latino neighborhoods and conducted in some cases by MCSO officers wearing black ski masks, have drawn widespread accusations of racial profiling.

Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox, an outspoken critic of Arpaio’s immigrant-bashing antics, told the Associated Press that today’s parade was “one of the most inhumane things I’ve ever heard.”

“[Arpaio’s] trying to justify this as a ‘budget savings,’ and I’m just appalled. It’s just another publicity stunt,” Wilcox said. “I don’t think you can segregate people that way, and we’re going to get all kinds of violations against us.”

Sheriff Joe Arpaio Stages Immigrant-Degradation March for the Cameras

IMMIGRATION IMPACT

February 4, 2009

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Phoenix, Arizona, seems to have an appetite for publicity so insatiable that it overrides both rationality and morality. His latest stunt—announced yesterday in an official press release, no less—comes today, when he will order “approximately 200 illegal aliens to be chained and marched” from the Durango Jail to a segregated area of his “Tent City” incarceration complex. Lest one be fooled into believing that this is a legitimate law—enforcement operation, Arpaio’s press release includes details on the parade route and where “interested media” should park to cover this spectacle of degradation.

According to Arpaio, marching chained immigrants from prison cells to tents surrounded by electric fencing will save money because it’s cheaper to house inmates in tents than in a traditional jail. However, Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox notes that Arpaio “doesn’t outline how he’ll save costs.” Acting County Manager Sandi Wilson says that if Arpaio is “coming up with budget savings, he ought to offer it up. At this point, he hasn’t. And this doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Arpaio’s claim to be genuinely concerned about the county budget is undermined by more than his apparent glee at the “shock” undocumented immigrants will receive if they attempt to scale the electric fence in which they will be enclosed. It is also contradicted by his well-documented history as a profligate spender of taxpayer money who prefers political grandstanding to serious law enforcement. As the Immigration Policy Center notes in a December 2008 fact sheet, investigations by the East Valley Tribune and the conservative Goldwater Institute have found that, under Arpaio’s leadership, the budget of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has nearly doubled since 2001, yet “response times to 911 calls have increased, arrest rates have dropped, and thousands of felony warrants have not been served.” Meanwhile, “hundreds of undocumented immigrants have been arrested for smuggling themselves, often when their vehicles are stopped for burned-out license plate lights or for traffic violations.”

Sheriff Arpaio’s newest media extravaganza at the expense of immigrants certainly won’t do anything to stop undocumented immigration or to reduce serious crime in his community. But it may help drum up even more publicity for Arpaio himself and further endear him to anti-immigrant activists. And perhaps that is what this is all about.

Stop the Abuse. Stop Joe Arpaio.

February 4, 2009 ·

Today at 1pm, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the infamous bad boy of Maricopa County, AZ is slated to march 220 immigrant inmates from the Durango Jail, through the streets of Phoenix to the “Tent City” that the sheriff has set up. These people will literally be shackled, mocked, taunted and marched through the streets like animals. And he’s sent out a press release and invited the media to cover this horrific event.

This is a new low, even for Sheriff Joe. I have documented many of his outrageous and racist tactics here at Standing FIRM - click here, here and here for more stories. And be sure to check out IPC’s fact sheet on Joe - who’s unchecked power is obviously spiralling out of control. This comes on the heels of previously classified documents being released that prove ICE’s abusive tactics in immigration raids have been ineffective and their violations have gone unprosecuted. For more on this click here.

Isn’t this America? Don’t we believe that all people were “created equal”? Do we not believe in human rights, civil rights? How can we stand by and allow human beings to become props in this megalomaniac’s reality TV show?

We are talking about a man that has said he was “honored” to the KKK, a man who has allowed dangerous criminals to go unscathed because of his obsession with targeting undocumented immigrants and a man who’s ego and power are spiralling quickly out of control

There must be vigilance of Sheriff Joe, otherwise what comes next? As Duke at the Santcuary stated earlier today:

Forced marches in chains, outdoor tent cities surrounded by electrified fences, forced labor on chain gangs as punishment for misbehavior … all that’s missing from this nightmare scene are the search lights and trained attack dogs….but who knows, maybe Arpaio has those also.

Sheriff Joe must be held accountable. CLICK HERE to sign a petition demanding that the Department of Justice investigate Arpaio and his racist, xenophobic and hateful tactics. We must demand an end to this. We will not allow extremism and racism to be tolerated. The need for comprehensive immigration reform is URGENT, otherwise these loose canons like Sheriff Joe will continue to exploit immigrants.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio to March Chained Immigrant Detainees Through Town to New Tent City

From:
El Rinconcito de Aurora
The hate and ego in this man knows no bounds, words fail to describe him, to call him an animal would be an insult to animals.
Doesn't this act falls under the category of 'cruel and inhuman treatment?' this
humiliation to the detainees is clearly an attempt to punish, isn't he overstepping his authority?
If he goes through and carries out his plans, the least we can do is to file a complain with the United Nation's Human Rights Commission for this clear violation of Universal Human Rights.

Arpaio humiliates undocumented detainees
Published by Alfredo Gutierrez - 03/02/2009
Presumably undocumented detainees will be denied Healthcare at the new electrified facility.

The undocumented detainees, all of which have not yet been tried or convicted of any crime, will pose no danger:

The consolidation of a large number of illegal aliens into Tent City, Arpaio says, should pose no substantial security problems as the area where they will be housed is protected by an electric fence.

"This is a population of criminals more adept perhaps at escape," the Sheriff says. "But this is a fence they won't want to scale because they risk receiving quite a shock - literally."

There is no statistical evidence presented that indicates that undocumented detainees are more likely to escape.

This may not be the last time that undocumented detainees are marched about and publicly humiliated in Phoenix Arizona.

“And anyone found to violate jail rules, may end up on a chain gang. This chain gang will work to clean the areas of the valley, which have been impacted by human trafficking trade.”

The public spectacle already being compared to the parading of slaves in the ante-bellum south will be covered and live blogged by La Frontera Times on Wednesday the 4th of February.

Sheriff Joe to March Immigrant Detainees Through Town to New Tent City

Wow. One of the more disturbing parts of the statement is the description of when and how the immigrants will be forced to march along with a map and parking instructions for those who wish to witness the event. Parading shackled detainees for public viewing is disgusting.

As a Jewish American it is deeply offensive to see an elected official brazenly flaunt the oppressive treatment of a people whose only crimes were entering the United States without documentation. The dire situation in Arizona is a shameful insult to the democratic freedoms of this country, and should draw cries of outrage from anyone who values the sacrifices our nation has made in the face of oppression.

We’ve seen this pattern in history before. First comes the bigoted propaganda and deprivation of basic human rights, then the intimidation, the detentions, the chains and the forced labor, and sometimes, god forbid, we see the worst. We saw it in Nazi Germany, the Killing Fields of Cambodia, the Japanese American Internment Camps, the Trail of Tears…the list goes on.

It’s the same old story. Just with a different tyrant - Joe Arpaio.

After marches, sheriff, what’s next? Box cars?

Frankly, however, the question before us is why this shoddy sheriff is getting away with “law enforcement” run amok. Where are the lawsuits against him? Where are the protests to shut him down? Where are the arrests for civil disobedience? Where are the incensed civic and religious leaders? Where are the civil and human rights advocates? Where is the national immigrant rights movement? Where are the politicians? Where is the federal government? Where?

Ten thousand prisoners in a county jail? A tent city for overflow, with an electrified fence? We’ve seen this horror show before. This is an incarceration empire emerging, generously supported by the people of Arizona. The state government recently gaveArpaio 1.6 million dollars back to fight “illegal immigration,” in spite of his tactics. If immigrant prisoners misbehave, we’re assured, they will be on a chain gang cleaning up the valley. Welcome to theWeimar Republic in the desert.
